St. John’s University’s Asian Pacific Heritage Month Keynote Speaker, Mr. Marcus
Cheung

On April 21, 2018, Marcus Cheung was selected to be Keynote Speaker to close St.
John’s University’s Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebrations.

With a major in business management and a minor in English, Marcus Cheung graduated
cum laude from the Tobin College of Business. As an undergraduate, Marcus volunteered
as a student coordinator for Project AIM (Asian and International Mentoring), guided the
Chinese Cultural Association as vice-president, co-chaired the Asian Pacific Heritage
Month Planning Committee, served as a student member of the President’s Multicultural
Advisory Committee, fulfilled obligations as a President’s Society Member, facilitated
the Asian Student Leader Roundtable Discussion as a secretary, and worked at the Office
of Business Affairs (General Accounting). Marcus was the only Asian American to ever
win the Martin DePaul Award in the history of St. John’s. At commencement, Marcus received an Outstanding Student Achievement Medal.
Outside of St. John’s University, he offered his time in two organizations at the heart of
Manhattan’s Chinatown, namely the New York Chinese School Patrol in which he
became a supervisor and the Association of Student Organizations at the Transfiguration
Chinese School over which he exercised authority as president.

During his years in St. John’s School of Law that culminated in his graduation in 2011,
he offered his time on the Executive Board of the Asian Pacific American Law Students’
Association and became vice-president of the Evening Students’ Association. During
graduation ceremonies, he received both the American Bar Association’s Award for
Excellence in the study of Labor & Employment Law along with the Daniel A. Furlong
Award for leadership and service to the law school community. As an alumnus and Class
Agent to the SJU Law School Class of 2011, he continues a spirit of service through his
membership in the Board of Advisors to the Center for Labor and Employment Law.
Marcus was the only student in the history of St. John’s, Asian American or not, to
receive service awards in both the undergraduate and law school divisions.

Today, Marcus works as an Associate Attorney at the Law Office of Steven Louros, a
firm with offices in Midtown Manhattan and Downtown Flushing. In his practice of
Personal Injury Law, he serves Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, Korean, and
English speakers. Through memberships in the Asian American Bar Association of New
York and the New York State Trial Lawyers’ Association, he continues a dialogue with
the advocacy community-at-large.
